Joanna Aplin’s figurative and abstract paintings are clean and captivating. Her classically trained yet contemporary approach to color, form, and line makes her work aesthetically pleasing to all walks of life. Her compositions carry an intrinsic sense of balance and proportion. Aplin takes her visual cues from the complexities in nature and the human form, then welcomes a reductive process – knowing it will lead to a simpler, more essential presentation of the subject matter. You can expect to find an eclectic mix of color in Joanna Aplin’s artwork. With a comprehensive grasp of color theory and an unwillingness to compromise on materials – her acrylic paintings bring about a rich presence for the viewer to behold.
An up-close inspection of Aplin’s work reveals intentional brushstrokes that can be layered with texture and other times smooth and uncomplicated. She explores the relationship between color and line, the real and the imaginary, in hopes of discovering the beauty in all things. Thematically, she pulls a lot from her everyday spiritual walk which always points to a message of victory and hope.
“I want to direct the hearts and minds of my viewers to the richness of Life in and around us.” – Joanna Aplin

There is a painting technique called chiaroscuro, commonly used in the works of Rembrandt, Vasari, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio, to name a few. It is the intentional use of (dramatic) shadow and light on figures and objects to intensify the moment the artist is capturing.
“The Divine Origins of Chiaroscuro” by Paul Barolsky, tells how many Great Masters in Art created works out from this understanding of how God at the very beginning of creation, separates the light from darkness. It was a powerful creative energy. God continues to do that mighty work each and every day.
I have always been drawn to the conflict and victory (shadow and light) found within the human spirit. The body can act out this tension so beautifully at times - which is part of the reason why I love painting the human form.
In this piece, the dramatic turning of the neck turns an ordinary pose into one that demands attention. The body, full of strain and emotion, caught between two worlds - is receiving from this new found place of rest.
Light is coming down upon this body, representing the Presence of God in this personal moment.
No human strength, will or determination can defeat the darkness - but this posture of desperation reveals a deep understanding that the Light is good and can provide much-needed rest.

A still life of two pears nestled in soft material symbolizes the blessing of marriage. A very intimate relationship God ordains between a man and woman can be full of great joy and blessing. I love this colour palette and how the pears turn into each other - enjoying the moment. " A cord of Three strands is not quickly broken." Eccl. 4:12

Three pears communing together in soft, playful colours. Having three of similar likeness definitely heightens the visual appeal of this piece. Three isn't a crowd here, instead it evokes a deeper, more harmonious connection between each other.

Just a month into winter, I couldn't help craving the colours that are brought about under the summer sun.

A study from an image of Peggy's Cove. I came upon this image and just loved the composition. I felt pastel was a good choice to accentuate the smooth qualities of the rock, sky and water.

This imagined landscape comes out of a need for quietness.
As I began to think about the colour palate, and the kind of landscape that would be calming to my soul, I could see a darker foreground (resembling my heaviness) meeting up to a land that is blanketed with warm, inviting hues.
There are hints that this is a setting close to still waters. A landscape calling me to join it in this moment of peaceful awareness.
The dense air keeps me there, calming my senses, yet heightening my need to release and be refreshed.
What a place to be.

Born and raised in rural Ontario, Joanna was free to explore her family’s farmland without restraint. The youngest of five children, she watched and learned, then took to her imagination to create. Her earliest memory that marked her passion for art making was asking her mom to sketch babies in her drawings.
“Seeing all the parts of a person come together fascinated me. It still does to this day.”
Aplin went on to study fine arts at McMaster University earning her BA in 1998 and a degree in Education in 2000. Since then, she has worked in numerous artistic arenas such as arts education, theatrical productions, and marketing her own art on a variety of social media platforms.
